Malaysia: Top Things to Do in KL with Kids
We’ve visited Kuala Lumpur many times. It’s a well connected transport hub and making the most of cheap Air Asia flights, we usually spend a few days visiting Malaysia’s capital.
Kuala Lumpur is packed with family-friendly activities that make a great city to explore with the kids.
With lots to do, rather than dashing from one place to another, you’ll get a much better feel for KL (and everyone will be less cranky) if you slow down.
Don’t cram everything into a one day itinerary. As with most cities in South East Asia, it’s hot and the traffic can be insane especially in the city centre, so pace yourself.
Choose an area or activities and plan your day around there.
Here’s our round-up of the top things to do in KL with kids—from iconic temples and incredible parks to science centers and bustling markets. Pick a few and save the rest for another visit. KL is one of those places you’ll want to return to again and again!
Getting Around KL with Kids
KL’s transport system is efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. Here’s what you’re most likely to use:
- MRT: Good for trips to the suburbs and Batu Caves.
- LRT (Light Rapid Transit): Connects many tourist spots and is easy to use.
- Monorail: Another easy to use transport offering a bird’s-eye view of the city.
Buying a KL TravelPass or Touch n Go card makes life a lot easier, as you won’t need to worry about loose change for fares or queue for tickets.
If you’re only in KL a few days, the pass is the way to go. But for sheer convenience, you can’t beat Grab taxis—they’re reliable, affordable, and arrive quickly, especially if you’re hauling around kids and gear. Sometimes cheaper when buying individual tickets for a family. Consider the traffic, especially for short trips during rush hour, no one enjoys sitting in traffic.
From the Airport: The airport even has a dedicated e-hailing section (ground floor, KLIA), making it easy to grab an Uber or Grab taxi to get right into the city. Or you can book a transfer in advance. There are also public transport options into Kuala Lumpur city too. You can take the KLIA Expres Train which takes 30 mins.
What to do in KL with kids
1. KLCC and the Petronas Twin Towers
No trip to KL is complete without a stop at the iconic Petronas Towers and the KLCC Park. The iconic towers have a lot going on around them too.
What to Do:
- Playground & Splash Park: With KL’s heat, kids will love the splash park for a cool-down. The huge playground nearby has equipment for all ages. There are areas around the edge for parents and the pools are staffed, mainly to ensure only families access the pool. There are toilets and changing rooms. The park is fun, some equipment is a little on the questionable side in terms of safety, and it can get super hot.
- KLCC Lake Symphony Light and Water Show: Each evening, the fountains put on a free show with lights and music at the base of the Petronas Towers. Catch the 8 pm, 9 pm, or 10 pm show from the Esplanade or a spot around the lake. We would grab a take out from the supermarket in the mall and sit on the grassy embankment.
- Petrosains Discovery Centre: Inside Suria KLCC, the Petrosains Discovery Centre is a hands-on STEM museum with interactive displays on science, technology, and petroleum (don’t worry, it’s more fun than it sounds!). Kids love the mini theater, dinosaur displays, and the giant oil rig model. It has lots of hands on interactive exhibits. Prices change depending on days and nationality but you can book tickets online here.
Family Tip: There are plenty of places nearby to grab a snack or lunch. The Suria KLCC Mall has loads of options, plus supermarkets to stock up on essentials. The KLCC Petronas Towers should definitely be on your list of places to visit with kids in Kuala Lumpur, you can’t miss this one,
Address: Petronas Twin Tower, Lower Ground (Concourse) Level, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50088
2. Batu Caves
A short train or Grab ride from central KL, Batu Caves is an easy trip from central Kuala Lumpur. Not only is it one of the most famous Hindu shrines outside of India, but it’s also home to a sprawling temple complex nestled in limestone caves.
It will take around half a day to visit and includes walking up lots of steps (275 according to my kids- the official count is wrong they claim). The caves are impressive. Just outside you might see people lining up to have their head shaved, a purification ritual part of the Hindu traditions.
What to Expect:
- The Rainbow Staircase: The 272 colourful steps leading to the Temple Cave are as much of a draw as the temple itself.
- Monkey Watch: Your kids might love spotting monkeys on the steps, but hang on to your belongings—these little guys are experts at stealing snacks and water bottles. Monkeys are not our favourite.
- Temple Exploration: Once inside, marvel at the incredible statues, shrines, and the high ceilings of the main cavern.
Family Tip: Arrive early to avoid the heat and crowds, it’s extra busy at the weekend. It’s free to enter the main area.
3. KL Tower and Eco Park Canopy Walk
KL Tower has some of the best views in the city. You can go all out with the Sky Deck and Sky Box, or keep it simple with the Observation Deck. It’s not the cheapest activity at 40RM for adults.
What to Do:
- Sky Box & Sky Deck: For those with a head for heights, the Sky Box is a glass cube extending over the edge—perfect for a “floating” family photo op.
- KL Forest Eco Park: Right by the tower, this forest reserve has trails and a canopy walk. Start from the top entrance near KL Tower and make your way down. We always enjoying finding green spaces in cities. It’s only a 30 minute walk.
Family Tip: If heights aren’t your thing, there’s a Tower Walk lower down around the KL Tower’s base, where you’re safely harnessed in for a loop around the tower. The Eco Park’s canopy walk is another good alternative.
Address : Menara Kuala Lumpur No. 2 Jalan Punchak Off, Jalan P. Ramlee, 50250 Kuala Lumpur
4. Sunway Lagoon Theme Park
Just a short drive from KL, Sunway Lagoon is a huge theme park with six different areas, from water slides to wildlife and a mini-zoo. Perfect for a whole day of fun!
Top Zones for Kids:
- Lost Lagoon Water Park: Great for toddlers with gentle water slides and baby-friendly splash zones.
- Water Park: There’s a small kids water playground. Lazy river’s fun too!
- Wildlife Park: This mini zoo has an aviary, white lions, and other animals.
- Amusement Park: Classic carnival rides like the Ferris wheel and carousel.
Family Tip: The park is big, so plan to tackle the water areas first while everyone’s energy is high. Tickets can be pricey, but the kids will be talking about it for days!
Address : 3, Jalan PJS 11/11, Bandar Sunway (about a 25-min drive from KLCC).
5. Kuala Lumpur Bird Park
Set within the Perdana Botanical Gardens, KL Bird Park is a large free-flight aviary filled with exotic bird species. You can see everything from flamingos to Malaysia’s national bird, the hornbill.
What to Do:
- Bird Feeding: Kids can feed parrots and other species.
- Wildlife Spotting: Stroll through the aviary and spot flamingos, hornbills, and even the occasional peacock strutting its stuff.
Family Tip: With the humid weather, you’ll be glad of the shade from the trees here, but bring water as the park can take a couple of hours to explore.
Address : 920 Jalan Cenderawasih, Perdana Botanical Gardens (about a 15-min drive from KLCC).
6. KidZania Kuala Lumpur
KidZania turns career day into a full-blown adventure, where kids can try out jobs like doctors, chefs, and firefighters in a mini city designed just for them. There are a few Kidzania’s around the world. It’s always pinned on our map but we haven’t made it there yet.
What’s Great About KidZania:
- Real-World Jobs for Kids: Over 60 different roles to try out, from firefighters to radio DJs.
- Earn & Spend KidZos: KidZania currency, or “KidZos,” lets kids earn money through their jobs and spend it on other activities.
Family Tip: KidZania only sell tickets online, so make sure you book before the big day. It’s also closed on Tuesdays. Check the website for up-to-date prices. This spot is perfect for rainy days or a break from KL’s heat!
7. Berjaya Times Square Theme Park
Inside the Berjaya Times Square mall is a four-story theme park. Surprisingly, its Malaysia’s largest indoor theme park. We first visited on a gap year (quite a while ago), it hasn’t changed massively in this time so some things feel a little dated although it’s a fun day. There are roller coasters, go karting and other rides and games.
Things to Do:
- Rides for All Ages: With everything from rollercoasters to gentler rides for younger kids, there’s something for everyone.
- Ninja Jungle Gym: For younger children, the jungle gym offers assault courses, climbing walls, and even a bike ride across a tightrope.
Family Tip: After all the fun, check out the mall’s shops and restaurants. Again, it’s one of KL’s older malls, so some of the floors feel a little sparse and empty but it has great budget options.
Address : Imbi, 55100 Kuala Lumpur,
8. Explore KL’s Markets – Petaling Street & Central Market
KL’s Petaling Street and Central Market are two must-visit spots for a fun (and potentially productive) shopping trip with kids. Both offer a mix of local snacks, souvenirs, and unique handicrafts.
What to Buy:
- Petaling Street is the knock off brand capital, from handbags to football shirts.
- Central Market: If you’re looking for quirky souvenirs like postcards, stickers, or puzzles, you can find some really Batik Painting: At Central Market, try your hand at batik painting—head to Ainna Artwork
Family Tip: Central Market is indoors and air-conditioned, perfect for a break from the heat.
Address: Jalan Hang Kasturi, Kuala Lumpur (about a 15-min drive from KLCC).
9. Indoor Playgrounds in KL Malls
KL malls go above and beyond when it comes to kid-friendly activities, with indoor playgrounds and climbing areas that are perfect for younger children.
Top Indoor Playgrounds:
- SuperPark: All-ages play space with slides, climbing walls, and ball pits.
- District 21: Adventure play area with trampolines, climbing courses, and zip lines.
- NextGen Theme Park & Fun X World: Large indoor playgrounds that are perfect for rainy days.
- Ninga Jungle Gym with assault courses, climbing walls, balance beams, abseiling, and even riding a bike across a tightrope, it’s lots of fun and is excellent value.
Family Tip: These play zones can be found in popular malls like 1 Utama and The Gardens, making it easy to combine with a quick shopping trip.
