Siam and Ratchathewi – Best Area for First-Time Visitors
If it’s your first time in Bangkok, Siam offers a central, easy-to-navigate location that’s ideal for families.
With its safe, walkable streets and a cluster of kid-friendly activities like Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World, there’s plenty to keep little ones entertained. Plus, you’ll have access to some of Bangkok’s top malls like Siam Paragon and MBK.
Bangkok’s Ratchathewi district is the city’s shopping area, with large malls and upscale hotels, particularly around Lumphini Park. Despite this, there are still some bargain accommodation to be found.
It has great transportation links. If you are looking for that Thai experience, this might not be the place for you but you will always find the street food stall to sample delicious thai food.
Budget:
- Lub d Bangkok Siam – A well-rated hostel with family rooms right next to MBK. Clean, comfortable, and won’t break the bank.
Mid-range:
- Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square – Modern and comfortable with a pool that’s perfect for kids. Right next to the BTS.
Luxury:
- Siam Kempinski Hotel – If you’re after a bit of luxury, this is the place. It’s got multiple pools, kids’ club activities, and direct access to Siam Paragon.
Riverside
For families who want a mix of culture and tranquility, Riverside is a beautiful spot. It’s close to Bangkok’s top landmarks like the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the buzzing Asiatique night market. The hotels here often come with larger grounds and pools, perfect for chilling after a day of sightseeing.

Sukhumvit
Sukhumvit is the go-to for families who want a modern city vibe with a side of adventure.
Well-connected by the BTS Skytrain (near Asok station), this prime location is home to Bangkok’s business district and shopping malls like Terminal 21, and green spaces like Benjasiri Park plus some great restaurants.
There is a real mix of cultures here and lots of western influence from the big expat community. It does lack some of the more authentic thai culture you might be looking for and accommodation tends to be pricier here, with budget options available if you search (hard).
Budget:
Hide and Seek Hometel – Located right under the BTS station. Good sized, clean comfortable rooms. Tasty breakfast and super friendly staff.
Mid-range:
Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 – Spacious rooms and a rooftop pool for the kids to splash around in.
Luxury:
MUU Bangkok – Family suite, clean spacious rooms with a pool and spa.
Phra Khanong
If you’re looking to experience more of the local side of Bangkok, Phra Khanong is a peaceful neighborhood away from the tourist crowds but convienant enough to access the city. It’s full of shopping malls, cafes and cinema; perfect for families who want a slower pace.
There are loads of activities for children, such as the interactive Kidzoona play space at Gateway Ekkamai, the educational Science Centre for Education, and outdoor play at Benchasiri Park. Visit the Erawan Museum and the incredible Ancient City for a unique cultural day out.
This area is well connected to central Bangkok with the BTS Sukhumvit line.
Budget:
- Sleep box Sukhumvit 22– A clean, budget-friendly hostel with basic but comfortable rooms. Close to the BTS.
Mid-range:
- Jasmine Resort Hotel – With a family-friendly pool and easy access to the BTS, this is a great mid-range option for families.

It isn’t the best connected in terms of public transport though.

- Tinidee Trendy Bangkok Khao San – Amazing hotel and great location. Surprisingly quiet and a good breakfast. Beautifully designed and family-friendly.
Mid-range:
- Baan Chart– Affordable, with family rooms and a pool to cool off in after a day exploring.

Riva Surya Bangkok – Located near the river with modern, stylish rooms and an outdoor pool. Great for families who want a bit more comfort.

Where NOT to Stay in Bangkok with Family
While Bangkok has plenty of family-friendly spots, a few areas are best avoided if you’re traveling with kids:
- Patpong: Known for its nightlife scene, this area is not exactly family-friendly. You will see things you will never unsee and learn things about the human body that you didn’t need to know!
- Nana Plaza: Another nightlife-heavy spot that’s better left unexplored with little ones.
- Pratunam: While it’s great for shopping, the hectic crowds and limited family attractions might make it overwhelming for families.
