Rain in bali? What to Do with Kids: A Family Guide to Rainy Days in Bali

Sharing is caring!

We all know Bali as the land of sandy beaches, surf spots, and amazing culture: there is a reason it’s the island of the Gods

But while Bali is mostly a beach paradise, it’s also packed with activities away from the coast —perfect for those inevitable rainy days.

Bali wet season runs for the other six months of the year, but before you let that put a damper on your holiday plans, you need to read this guide to the rainy days in Bali because it’s better than it sounds.

From exploring museums and art galleries to splashing around in waterfalls, Bali has endless possibilities that will keep the family entertained, even when the skies open up.

Here’s how to make the most of a rainy day in Bali with kids, rain poncho and all!

Dont worry, be happy. There is still loads to do on rainy days in Bali!

What Is Bali’s Rainy Season?

Bali’s wet season generally spans from October to April, with December through February seeing the heaviest rainfall. Thankfully, even during the rainy season, Bali often experiences short, tropical downpours rather than all-day rain, so you’re likely to find plenty of sunny breaks to enjoy outdoor activities.

Is This The Same As Monsoon Season?

Yes and no. The heaviest rains are in December and January and the rain is kind of considered a monsoon…in the rainy season.

Most people consider Bali’s monsoon season to be those two months only. The rainy days in Bali are more like a brief tropical storm than an endless downpour for the rest of the wet season.

When is Bali’s Rainy Season?

Being British, its tricky to think of rain coming in seasons, it’s more of an all year thing for Brit’s but this part of Indonesia has two distinct seasons: rainy and dry seasons

The Bali rainy season typically peaks from December through February, but can begin as early as October. While rainfall can be intense, the rain in Bali doesn’t last all day, a lot of the time you can wait it out.

You can check the weather app but a much bigger clue with the sense of impending doom in the sky. Head in the opposite direction to the big black raincloud.

Of course, the weather is only as reliable in Bali as anywhere else on Earth and you may find that the rains come a month early or a month late.

Why You Should Visit Bali in the Rainy Season.

  • Visiting Bali in the low season is cheaper
  • You avoid the crowds in Bali rainy season
  • The waterfalls and ricefields are at their peak amazingness

Rain generally puts the majority of people off but the rainy season in Bali means fewer crowds, lower prices, and lush, green landscapes at their best.

Bali’s waterfalls, like Tukad Cepung and Gitgit in the north, Jembong near Singaraja, and Tegenungan near Ubud, reach their peak beauty after a good rainfall.

Rain might be an inconvenience, but it makes bali’s natural side shine.

What’s It Like During Rainy Season in Bali?

Think tropical warm showers. Followed by warm sun to dry you back off.

You might notice new streams and rivers appear as the roads flood during the Bali monsoon season, but the waters tend to clear quickly once the rain stops though.

The Downsides of Bali’s Rainy Season

While rainy days in Bali has perks, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Lightning and thunderstorms can sometimes be intense, and when they’re around, it’s best to stay indoors.

If you’re navigating the island on a scooter, rain ponchos (Bali Macs) are essential, but wait out heavy rain if possible.

Another downside? Mosquitoes! With more stagnant water, these little pests thrive in the wet season. To avoid dengue fever, cover up in the mornings and evenings, and keep insect repellent handy.

What to Wear ON rainy days in Bali

Pack lightweight, quick-drying clothes and waterproof shoes to stay comfy in the rain. Ponchos are essential, as are backpacks with rain covers. It’s also smart to pack extra clothes for the kids and some reusable dry bags to separate wet items (we love these and they have been used and abused for over 2 years).

How to Dry Clothes in Bali’s Rainy Season

Not an issue in Bali, there are 7 laundry shops on every corner and they will have your clothes washed, ironed and ready to be picked up in 24 hours.

Health Tips for Bali’s Rainy Season

Mosquitoes are more active during Bali’s rainy season, so stock up on insect repellent and use it liberally, especially on kids.

Keep hydrated to stay energized in the humid weather. It’s also a good idea to keep a list of nearby clinics and pharmacies, just in case.
