I’m sure everyone is aware of the …unpredictable elements to the weather in the UK, so as long as you pack clothing and equipment for all four seasons, you will be more than prepared.

Nestled in the Cairngorms National Park—the largest national park in the UK—Aviemore is the ideal jumping-off point for families.
With endless outdoor activities you are surrounded by nature. Whether you’re hunting for red squirrels (our kids were on a mission!), chatting with a highland cow, or getting up close and personal with reindeers, you are surrounded by nature.
And yes, you might just get to ski and snowboard all in one day if the weather gods are feeling generous, (luckily we were there in July so missed this but it is Scotland so you never know when you might get snow).
Aviemore itself is small but packed with things to do.

Full confession: we were incredibly lucky with the weather on our trip to Aviemore. For three whole days, we basked in blue skies and warm breezes—yes, in Scotland!
But let’s be honest, we all know the UK’s weather can be a tad unpredictable. So, do yourself a favour and pack for all four seasons in a day. You’ll thank me later.
Late spring to early autumn (May to September) is generally the best time for families to visit. The weather is milder, and more activities are available.
Do consider school holidays as things can get much busier. However, winter is also fantastic if your family enjoys skiing or snowboarding.

Meeting the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd
The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is the only free-ranging herd of reindeer in the UK, located in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. Set up in 1952 by a Swedish reindeer herder, the intention was to reintroduce reindeer to Scotland, where they had been extinct for centuries.
Watching our kid’s hand-feed these gentle giants was nothing short of magical, and the guides were fantastic at sharing all sorts of reindeer facts (who knew they could run up to 50 mph?!).

Fun at the Highland Wildlife Park
The Highland Wildlife Park is popular spot to visit. With animals native to the Highlands, like red pandas and snow leopards, it’s an engaging way for them to learn about wildlife conservation. We didn’t visit in our short trip.

Hiking Trails for Families in the Cairngorms National Park
One of the best parts of Aviemore is the easy access to fantastic hiking trails.
We kicked off our first day with a classic Scottish breakfast—think black pudding and all the trimmings—before heading out to explore.
We hiked a trail perfect for families, offering stunning views of the Cairngorms and plenty of spots to stop and let the kids run wild.

Cycling and Mountain Biking Routes for All Ages
After a big Scottish breakfast at one of the town’s many cozy cafes, we suggest heading up to Glenlivet trails, a mountain biking paradise that offers everything from gentle rides to adrenaline-pumping descents.
With over 100 miles of trails to choose from, there’s something for everyone – whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner.
The girls had a great time, Indi is an experienced off roader and this was Beau’s first ride.
She managed a 10k trail which was challenging in parts but she managed it all.
The scenic routes wind through lush forests, across babbling streams, and up challenging climbs that reward you with panoramic views of the Cairngorms. Don’t forget to pack a picnic and take a break to refuel and soak up the scenery.
Lakes for Swimming
On a warmer day, (or cold if you are feeling brave) head to Loch an Eilein: Surrounded by forest the where the kids can splash around in the shallow waters or swim to castle in the middle.
I was told the water was FREEZING!
It’s not far from Aviemore.

Loch Morlich, where the kids can splash around in the shallow waters while you relax on the sandy beach.
Loch Insh: A bit further afield, this loch is known for its water sports and has areas suitable for swimming. It’s less crowded compared to Loch Morlich.
Rainy Day Activities in Aviemore and the Cairngorms
Scotland wouldn’t be Scotland without a bit of rain. But, don’t worry—Aviemore has indoor options to keep the family entertained.
Indoor Play Centres and Soft Play Areas
The Macdonald Hotel in Aviemore is a great activity centre, with a outdoor play park, a 4 storey soft play and a great indoor swimming pool…with slides.
The bad news is, most of these facilities are only available for guests. Check out the prices for your stay.
Visit to the Aviemore Ice Rink
We spent a great afternoon at the Aviemore Ice Rink, where we got to hold the very wobbly hands of our kids trying to balance themselves on ice!
They had a blast, and it was a great way to escape the sun for a bit (yeah, I realise I didn’t say rain but remember that mini heatwave I mentioned earlier!).
Where to Eat in Aviemore with Kids
After all that exploring, we needed some serious refueling. Aviemore has some great spots for families—think hearty Scottish fare, cozy cafés, and plenty of kid-friendly options.
On the other hand, there is always the local supermarket for a meal deal.
One stand out was The Old Bridge Inn, really delicious dinner on the banks of the river Spey!
Leave the kids at home and head to a whiskey distillery
This would be my worst nightmare but in celebration of a certain big birthday, Jak was sent off with a friend to sample the delights of the Glenlivet Whiskey distillery at 11am on a Tuesday morning!
This particular tour included the sampling of ‘special cask whiskeys’ and he appeared to have enjoyed himself immensely when he waddled out several hours later.
There are loads of different distillery’s to choose from but one of the most popular distillery tours in the area is the Glenlivet Tour, which takes you through the history of the brand and the whiskey-making process
