We travelled to the Gili Islands with kids in 2023 and again in 2024. We spent an amazing two months exploring Bali and Lombok before heading to the Gili islands.
The Gili Islands are not just another destination; they have the difficult task of matching up to its image of paradise.

So, does it manage it? Erm…mostly.
In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know to make your family trip to the Gili Islands an unforgettable adventure. From picking the perfect island to finding family-friendly accommodation and planning epic activities.
Choosing the Best Gili Island for Families
Where are the Gili islands?
The Gili’s are three small islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air) located just off the coast on Lombok in Indonesia.
You might recognise the name from the BBC Race Across the World, and if you haven’t watched it…do! There are a few other Gili islands but these are the main ones.
Alright, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of choosing the perfect Gili Island for your family adventure.
With three main islands to choose from – Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno – each offers its own unique charm and appeal.
But which is the best Gili Island for families? Let’s break it down:
Gili Trawangan
First up, we have Gili Trawangan, often known as the “party island” because of its nightlife and bustling atmosphere.
But don’t let that scare you off—Gili T (as it’s also called) also has plenty of family-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and activities.
If your family enjoys being in the heart of the action with lots of options for activities, Gili Trawangan might be your best bet.

Gili Air
Next, we have Gili Air, known for its laid-back vibes and stunning natural beauty. If you’re seeking a more relaxed and quieter experience, Gili Air might be the perfect choice for your family.
With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking sunsets, Gili Air offers a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Gili Meno
Finally, we have Gili Meno, the smallest and most secluded of the three islands. If you’re craving a truly off-the-beaten-path experience, and a bit of that Robinson Crusoe vibe, then Gili Meno is the place to be.
It’s a slower pace of life here, which might be exactly what your family needs to recharge.

Which Gili Island is best for families?
It really depends on your preferences and what you’re hoping to get out of your island getaway. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, there’s a Gili Island that’s just right for your family.
Our preference is Gili Air but we have taken a local boat across to the other islands to explore. Gili Air has a good mix of quietness but with plenty of places to eat, and things to do. There is even an escape room!
Family-Friendly Accommodation Options
Alright, let’s talk about where to lay your heads at night while adventuring on the Gili Islands.
Finding the right place to stay is important for a successful family trip.
The Gili Islands offer a wide range of family-friendly accommodations to suit every budget and preference.
The good news is, the islands are small so you will never be too far from the beaches. Bear in mind that the islands are part of Lombok, also known as the ‘land of a thousand mosques’ so you are likely to hear the call to prayer.
There are plenty of luxury places to stay but if you’re traveling on a budget or prefer a more laid-back vibe, there are plenty of affordable accommodation options available as well.

Best Beaches for Kids on the Gili Islands
There are a good selection of beaches on the islands. But we noticed here how important it was to check tide times and follow local advice.
Here are some tips and recommendations for making the most of your beach time:
Choosing Safe Swimming Spots
The Gili Islands are home to some really beautiful beaches with calm, shallow waters that are perfect for young swimmers.
Gili Meno Beach and Gili Air’s East Coast are particularly well-suited for kids, offering gentle waves and soft, sandy shores.
Snorkeling Hotspots
Snorkeling is a must-do activity when visiting the Gili Islands.
Head to Turtle Point off the coast of Gili Trawangan for a chance to encounter turtles up close.
Gili Meno’s Turtle Sanctuary is another fantastic spot to observe these creatures in their natural habitat while snorkeling.
Don’t be that person who tries to touch the turtles! Remember to practice responsible snorkeling by avoiding touching coral and keeping a safe distance from marine life.
We took a private boat snorkling trip for 8 people for the morning. We avoided the hotspots such as the statues and saw lots of turtles, and some beautiful marine life.

Best Beaches for Snorkeling
If you’re seeking the best snorkeling spots from the beach head to Gili Meno’s Sunset Beach and Gili Air’s North Coast.
These beaches have crystal-clear waters teeming with colorful coral reefs and tropical fish.
You can rent snorkeling gear from one of the many beachside shops. I would recommend water shoes for kids too as some of the beaches have lots of coral.
Sea Safety Tips
No parenting tips here but be cautious about when and where you swim or snorkel. Check the tides.
We swam out when the tide was pretty low and there was a strong wind meaning it was exhausting to swim around and almost impossible to put your feet down because of the coral underneath.
Don’t be like us!

How to Get to the Gili Islands
Alright, let’s talk logistics! Getting to the Gili Islands may seem like a bit of a journey, but trust me, the destination is worth it.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to reach these tropical paradise islands with ease:
By Fast Boat: One of the most popular ways to reach the Gili Islands is by fast boat from Bali or Lombok. Several reputable ferry companies operate daily services from Padang Bai or Sanur (check which terminal)in Bali, as well as Bangsal Harbor in Lombok.
The journey typically takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the departure point and sea conditions.
The recommendation is generally to go early as there is more chance of calm seas but no guarantees and there can be some pretty horrible trips.
We travelled with Wahan Gili Ocean and it was brilliant. No horror stories here. Air Con, great service and no shared seats! You can book direct here
Via Public Ferry: Alternatively, you can opt for the public ferry from Bangsal Harbor in Lombok to Gili Trawangan, (with a stop at Gili Air) which operates several times a day.
While this option may be more budget-friendly, it’s worth noting that the journey can be longer and less comfortable.
We took this option and we slightly squished up with deliveries for the islands and electric bikes but it wasn’t a long journey so wasn’t a huge issue.
Charter a Private Boat: For families seeking a more personalised and hassle-free travel experience (and a slightly bigger budget), chartering a private boat to the Gili Islands may be the way to go.
Consider Air Travel: If you’re short on time or prefer to avoid long ferry journeys, you can also reach the Gili Islands by air.
Several airlines operate daily flights from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to Lombok International Airport, followed by a taxi ride to Bangsal Harbour.

Final Thoughts: Is the Gili Islands with kids Worth the Hype?
Now, the big question: do the Gili Islands live up to the hype?
In our experience—yes and no!
The Gili Islands are beautiful and offer something special for families, whether it’s stunning beaches, exciting snorkeling spots, or that paradise experience.
But for us, my paradise has less crowds! Whilst the snorkling was great, there is quite limited beach time because of tides. Would I go again? Probably, but have I told you about Lombok?
As you plan your trip, remember the essentials: choose the right island for your family’s vibe, prioritize safety in and out of the water, and make the journey as smooth as possible by considering your transportation options.
